The Giclée Process
The Giclée process is ideal for creating the highest quality
archival prints of original art. Our artists can be involved in
each step of the process, from image capture to final print approval.
First, we capture an artist's work with a specially
adapted 4X5 digital camera, which records incredible detail and
the truest colors. We adjust the captured image on the computer
screen to match (or edit) the original and welcome the artist's
feedback.
Once a proof is approved, we reproduce the image
on a eight-color Epson digital press which sprays millions of
drops of ink onto the paper. Our archival inks resist fading
and last longer (up to 200 years) than any other ink available.
Brilliant Giclées are individually produced
on fine hand-moulded papers and genuine linen canvas, enhancing
their aesthetic quality.
What Makes Our Giclées Different?

The term Giclée (from the French word for
"spurt") refers to any print made with an inkjet printer
that sprays ink onto paper or canvas. But how the print is generated
makes a huge difference in the final quality of the Giclée.
| • |
By digitally capturing the original
art, Brilliant avoids any intermediate photography steps
that can degrade the quality of the original. |
| • |
Some Giclées use viscous,
dye-based inks. We use pigmented inks that resist fading
and last longer (up to 200 years) than any other ink available. |
| • |
Brilliant Giclées have
a minimum of eight colors, yielding a richer, denser color
palette than standard four-color Giclées. |
| • |
Instead of one or two commercial
papers, we offer eight very different papers and two fine
canvases. |

Our exhibition (display) prints for photographers
are Giclées that begin life differently from our Giclées
for other artists.
Instead of first capturing original artwork with
our digital camera, we start by scanning a photographer's original
transparency or negative, or we work directly with a digital file.
Our master printer, Bob Tursack, Jr., is also a serious photographer
who "gets" what other photographers want to do with
their images and how to get there.
We work with the captured image on the computer
screen, so we can match or edit the original per the artist's
direction. We can tone or burn and dodge just as in a traditional
darkroom, working closely with photographers to achieve the desired
result. And our digital darkroom makes it easy to exactly replicate
the same result in future prints.
Once a proof is approved, we reproduce the image
on a eight-color Epson digital press which sprays millions of
drops of ink onto the paper. Our archival inks resist fading
and last longer (up to 200 years) than any other ink available.

We make copperplate etchings from all types of originals on an
antique etching press from the studios of Emmy Lou Packard and
Diego Rivera. We can either produce positives to expose the copperplates,
or work directly from an artist's film, prepared acetate or tracing-paper
substrates.
Our master printer, Bob Tursack, Jr., has spent
over 30 years working with ink, emulsion and paper. If you're
interested in creating etchings, he'll be happy to collaborate
with you.
